Mobility transition progressing in Hamburg

Senate adopts strategy on expanded digital mobility, autonomous shuttles, digital underground and rapid transit systems

The senate adopted the “Digital Mobilty Strategy” Tuesday (April 9, 2024) in a bid to make transport in Hamburg digital, efficient and user-friendly. The strategy foresees measures for the provision of mobility and infrastructure data in real time. That forms the basis of transport policy planning and autonomous driving and is among the key aspects of the strategy.

Making mobility easier, more convenient and faster

"Digitalisation offers an enormous opportunity for the mobility transition. It can make mobility easier, more convenient and faster for people," said Dr Anjes Tjarks, Senator for Transport and Mobility Transition. The aim is to provide public transport all over the city within five minutes under the so-called “Hamburg-Takt”. The digitalisation projects for the underground and autonomous on-demand shuttles to supplement public buses and train services should help achieve that goal. Other key aspects of the new strategy are intelligent traffic light systems and strengthening the HVV Switch mobility platform. That should make ticket sales or e.g., car sharing even more convenient.

Hamburg pioneering mobility transition

The city is pioneering digital mobility innovations and now tops Bitkom's "Smart City Index" in the mobility category. The "Digital Mobility Strategy” builds on an agreement with the German government to turn Hamburg into a “metropolitan model region of mobility” with digital rail and autonomous shuttles. At the moment, the city is gearing up to host the international UITP Summit in 2025 and 2027.

UITP Summit

The City of Hamburg prevailed over Vienna, Geneva and Istanbul to host the next UITP Summits. The leading global mobility congress also comes with a trade fair. Projects are now being developed for the UITP Summit to shape and improve transport in Hamburg well after it has ended.
